Self Esteem
Self esteem is your inner self-worth. Yours can be high or low depending on a number of factors. Parental influence, peer influence, and self taught influence all affect your self-esteem.
How you were raised, the type of family environment that you grew up in drastically affects your self-eteem. This happens either positively or negatively.
If you had an abusive childhood, or even a childhood with a lack of good family interaction then you may suffer from low self-esteem. Low self-esteem can take many forms. If you have low self-confidence, anxiety, depression, troubling thoughts, or general feelings of something being wrong then you likely suffer from low self-esteem.
If you were raised in a healthy environment your chances of having high self-esteem are great. You would have high self-confidence and would generally feel good about yourself. You would accomplish most or all of life's tasks with satisfaction.
Peer influence can have either a positive or negative affect as well. If you are involved with people that generally practise poor life habits then you too will have a greater chance of developing low self-esteem. If your circle of influence is with those that practice positive life habits then you will develop a healthy self-esteem.
The most important aspect of self-esteem though, is self taught influence. There is a simple reason for this. The power exists within you to develop healthy self-esteem. This ability is independent of any other influence on your self-esteem.

The first step to developing a healthy self-esteem is to begin thinking consciously. This is difficult but it ultimately separates the wheat from the chaff or the good from the bad. In other words, it will define you as a source of power onto yourself and others.
A simple example. Say you are overweight and want to lose a few pounds. You have a choice to either eat more than you actually require or to eat only what you require to sustain yourself. Do you have one piece of dessert? Or do you irrationally justify several pieces of dessert? By making the appropriate choice you are thinking consciously.
Thinking consciously is making appropriate choices and carrying them out. It is about being rational and realistic, understanding that practice and consistancy is the way to developing your inner and outer power.
Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer ever because he practices consistently. He also loves what he does. This has rewarded him with a fantastic life. A great example of an individual that thinks consciously and has high self-esteem.
