The definition of depression is a condition of general emotional dejection and withdrawal that in most cases includes prolonged sadness. I have suffered from mild depression. I don't like it and have learned to recognize the signs and symptoms so as to immediately deal with the problem. I feel the effects especially during winter. This is called
SAD.
I also have a tendency to lapse into depression when things don't seem to be going good. This is why it's so important to take care of yourself. I make it a habit to get out into the sun everyday. This really helps me. Eating good healthy foods makes a big difference as does getting a restful night's sleep.
There may be other signs and symptoms that are hidden. For instance, a depressed person may not have much energy. You may sleep for extended hours. Or you may overeat, especially the wrong types of food. Often overweight people are depressed. Even though they know something is not right they have a hard time pinpointing the problem. In both cases your family and friends may not realize that you are depressed.
